Good Samaritan Allegedly Beaten to Death by the Man He Was Helping

Was a retired college professor brutally murdered by the very man he was helping? Authorities in Florida think so.

On Thursday, police arrested 37-year-old Stephen Underwood Jr. in connection with the murder of Thomas Oakland, 75, a former University of Florida professor, the Associated Press reports.

Authorities initially believed that Oakland died in a house fire last Wednesday, but an autopsy revealed that he'd actually been fatally struck in the head before his house was torched, according to WJXT.

Police say Oakland acted as a good Samaritan to Underwood, giving him more than $37,000 in cash over the years before his untimely death last week.

"Mr. Oakland was shopping at a local Winn-Dixie, and Mr. Underwood approached him in the parking lot and just asked for money, and Mr. Oakland, being the kind person that he was, gave Mr. Underwood money," Gainesville police spokesman Ben Tobias told WJXT.

But that relationship turned sour, and last month Oakland contacted authorities to report that he'd been defrauded by Underwood, an ex-convict who did time in jail for fraud and trafficking in stolen property.

"The reporting officer asked [Oakland] why he had given so much money, and he responded quite simply, and I quote, 'I'm just a good Christian trying to help a poor man get back on his feet,' " Tobias said.

But when Oakland refused to give Underwood any more money, Underwood allegedly killed him and took all the cash he could find in the house before burning it down, police claim.

Underwood's wife, Sherry Underwood, 48, told police that her husband had a large bag of cash that she found suspicious. "She knew he was unemployed and had no funds of his own, and all of a sudden he had a bag of cash," Tobias told the AP.

Underwood is being held without bail on charges of murder, arson, burglary and grand theft.

Meanwhile, Oakwood's family is distraught over his senseless death. "People have said, I've never met you before, but your father is the reason I am who I am today," Oakland's son Chris told WJXT. "Your father encouraged me to do this, your father gave me strength, your father gave me wisdom; I've been on planes before where I meet people and mention my dad, and they know him."
